Tracheostomy is a common procedure undertaken by Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Doctors with approximately 15,000 procedures undertaken in the UK, and 100,000 procedures in the USA annually. Tracheostomy complications (e.g. haemorrhage, aspiration) account for half of all airway-related deaths and cases of brain damage in critical care. In this project we will further develop an electromagnetic technique for guiding the tracheostomy procedure. A key area for development is the software interface with the hardware. In this project we will demonstrate the system is safe to use, improve usability and ergonomics, and quantify clinical improvement of the system compared to the existing tracheostomy procedure. To achieve the project your advanced knowledge of programming, design and development is needed
